Chiyaan Vikram has a winner in Kanthaswamy. It is pure commercial masala entertainer that strikes a fine balance between style and substance, and also has a neat message. Susi Ganeshan has constructed an engrossing action driven adventure with panache.
Cheran, who doubles up as director and actor has played both part exceedingly well. It’s a role that he is comfortable doing it. Though one-dimensional at few places, he lends grace and dignity to the character. All credit should go to Padmapriya, who brings to light the travails of a woman, who is caught between his family and his lover.
The effort gone into re-creating 1970 is apparent; rupee notes, buses, stationery, calendars and magazines work to bring an authentic feel to the movie, while Cheran and Padmapriya, clearly the stars of the show, have come together to deliver a realistic, touching performance. Vijaykumar and Ilavarasu, together with a whole batch of Bengali-speakers form a perfect backdrop.
